Overview:

One of the great things about writing is that it can serve so many different purposes and be directed at many different audiences. Over the course of your high school writing, you will find yourself writing several different types of essays.

Expository essays focus primarily on an explanation of a topic, whereas persuasive essays present an argument to the reader of your essay that is supposed to be convincing. Narrative essays focus on telling a personal story or relaying a personal experience, and fiction or imaginative essays give you free reign to create characters and events of your choosing.

On this site, you will find some links that take you to pages for these specific types of essays. There you will find some suggestions to help you write the strongest essay possible. These pages emphasize larger issues like organization and technique. However, remember that all types of essays should show a command of grammar and style appropriate to its purpose.
